Siesta Boxing Promotions is delighted to announce that talented Russian Middleweight; Artur Akavov (18-2) will fight for the vacant WBO International Middleweight title against Argentinian, Gonzalo Coria (12-1) at Arena Riga, Latvia on “The Night of Super Fights” show on the 12th May.
An already stacked card featuring Isa Chaniev (12-1) v Ismael Barroso (20-1-2) and Konstantin Ponomarev (33-0) v Ismail Iliev (10-0-1), Akavov was considered by many as “Robbed!” when he fought WBO World Champion Billy Joe Saunders in late 2016, losing via a controversial unanimous decision in Scotland. Since that disappointing evening, Akavov has rallied with back to back victories against Josue Abando in America and Juan Carlos Prada this March in Estonia.
With the WBO International title on the line it provides the perfect opportunity for Akavov to propel himself up the rankings within the WBO and get another chance to fight WBO Champion Billy Joe Saunders.
“I was very disappointed with what happened in Scotland against Billy Joe Saunders! I like many others believe I won that fight. At very least the judges could have scored the bout more fairly. One judge gave Billy 4 rounds! However, I have kept my head down, worked hard in the gym and I believe I will get my vengeance one day. I cannot look past Gonzalo Coria though. He is a young hungry warrior who will be coming to disrupt my career.”
“It’s a great opportunity for me to fight on such a prestigious show in Riga with Siesta Boxing. It’s a huge fight that could define my career; I’m taking that belt home to Russia with me!”
